The apparatus was invented by Captain George William Manby, inspired by his witnessing a ship HMS Snipe (1801) run aground off Great Yarmouth in 1807. The first recorded rescue using the Manby apparatus was on

These life saving devises were first used by the USLSS, ( Unites States Life Saving Services ) a predecessor to the United States Coast Guard.
It is in stunning condition.  Excellent patina. Minimal degradation to the Iron. Original finish to the best of my knowledge. On all 4 sides of the base, which would be the closest to the original mounting platform, is faded well worn off Red Paint. Depicted accurately in the photo.
For the the serious maritime collector looking to complete or expand their collection of  historical items that are rare, unique and just plain cool.

Mounted on a heavy Oak platform measuring approximately 25 1/2 ”  X 19″ @ 7.5 ” Tall with the (4) 3.5 ” non marring 360 swivel wheels. This can be easily rolled by one individual on solid floors, or with minimal effort on carpeting.
Total height from floor to top of Mortar is approximately 20″  .
Weight around 200 Pounds.

On the top of the base, front, directly below the Barrell tip, and in addition directly underneath the neck of the barrel  are 2 digits that appear to be identical in both locations and  read as follows:      77.
